The Evolution of World Record Deadlifts

From Strongman to Powerlifting and Grip Strength

The deadlift is one of the most iconic and challenging exercises in the world of strength sports. It involves lifting a loaded barbell off the ground from a standing position. The heaviest deadlift ever recorded is an astounding 501 kg (1,104.5 lb), which was achieved by Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson of Iceland in 2020.

The deadlift world record has been progressing steadily over the years. In 1977, Don Reinhoudt (USA) lifted 320 kg (705 lb) in the powerlifting competition. Just a few years later, in 1984, Bill Kazmaier (USA) became the first person to deadlift over 400 kg (881.8 lb) with a lift of 402.5 kg (887 lb). In 1986, Jamie Reeves (USA) broke the 450 kg (992.1 lb) barrier with a lift of 457.5 kg (1,008.6 lb).

The deadlift world record continued to rise in the 1990s and 2000s. In 1997, Andy Bolton (England) lifted 457.5 kg (1,008.6 lb) in a powerlifting competition. In 2006, Benedikt Magnússon (Iceland) set a new world record of 460 kg (1,014.1 lb) in the World's Strongest Man competition.

In 2020, Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson (Iceland) broke the 500 kg (1,102.3 lb) barrier with a lift of 501 kg (1,104.5 lb) in a powerlifting competition. This is the heaviest deadlift ever recorded and remains the world record today.

The deadlift world record is a testament to the incredible strength and dedication of these athletes. It is an exercise that continues to push the limits of human potential.
