Sorcery Spells in Magic: The Gathering

Definition

Sorcery spells are one-shot or short-term magical spells in Magic: The Gathering. Unlike enchantments or creatures, they are not put onto the battlefield when cast. Instead, they have an immediate effect and are then discarded.

Types of Sorcery Spells

There are three main types of sorcery spells:

  • Instant spells can be cast at any time during a player's turn, even in response to their opponent's actions. Instant spells are often used to counter other spells or creatures.
  • Non-instant spells can only be cast during a player's main phase. Non-instant spells are typically more powerful than instant spells, but they are also more vulnerable to being countered.
  • Adventure spells are thematic instants or sorceries that relate to a permanent. In this way, they are an unusual mix of instant spells and enchantments.
