Andy Murray Wins in Unbelievable Comeback

Andy Murray has produced another scarcely believable display to fight back from two sets down to beat Thanasi Kokkinakis in one of the great grand slam matches of all.

As Thanasi Kokkinakis stepped up to the baseline with a two-set lead to serve out one of the great Australian Open upsets, there were likely not many inside Margaret Court Arena who thought Andy Murray could find a way back.

But the three-time grand slam champion wasn’t done yet. He battled back to win the match in five sets, 4-6, 6-7 (4-7), 7-6 (7-5), 6-3, 7-5, in a match that lasted more than five hours.

It was Murray’s first win at a grand slam since 2017 and his first five-set match win since 2016, a remarkable achievement for a player who has been plagued by injuries in recent years.

Kokkinakis, who upset Stefanos Tsitsipas in the first round, served for the match at 5-4 in the fifth set, but Murray broke back and then held his own serve to level the set at 5-5.

Murray then broke again in the 11th game and served out the match to complete an incredible comeback.

“I don’t know how I managed to do it,” Murray said after the match. “I was just hanging on and fighting as hard as I could. I’m so proud of myself for getting through that.

“It’s been a tough few years, but I’m starting to feel like myself again. I’m really happy with the way I’m playing, and I’m excited to see what I can do in the rest of the tournament.”

Murray, 35, is now in the third round of the Australian Open for the 16th time in his career. He will face Roberto Bautista Agut of Spain in the next round.
